An Interview with Don Jose Ruiz: Shamanic Power Animals

don Jose Ruiz was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and was raised in Tijuana, Mexico. When he was 21, he came to live in the U.S. with his father, don Miguel Ruiz. From an incredibly young age, don Jose was guided by many teachers present in his life, including his mother and father, grandmother Sarita, and several other Naguals. Through masterful guidance by his teachers and amazing life experiences with precision synchronicity, Jose came to ‘silent knowledge’; he witnessed the World as it is, without any story. In his early twenties, don Jose lost his eyesight. In his process of surrendering, he discovered the value of learning to listen.

To listen to his inner wisdom and integrity and to see different perspectives while knowing nothing is personal. As a result, he had a renewed love and gratitude for life ~ and he found acceptance, happiness, and abundance; he found bliss. He grasped a true understanding of faith, love, gratitude, and humility. Through his surrender and faith, in concert with modern medicine, Jose recovered his eyesight. (don Jose Ruiz-Photo credit by Lisa Hantke)

Ministry Earth: Why Power Animals? Tell us a bit of your Book, the spiritual messages of Nature’s kingdom, and the inspiration behind its creation.

don Jose Ruiz: Power animals are very important in the Toltec tradition. I dedicate my books to them because they are artists that need to be acknowledged. We get inspiration from them. They inspire us to create our inner art. Sometimes people can get inspired by songs or someone else’s art, but the animal kingdom, Nature’s kingdom, is one of the most powerful ways to become inspired. It’s the purest there is. There is no agenda.

No knowledge corrupts the animal’s mind, and they are just pure. They see life for what it is. So I get inspired by the animal kingdom and the creation they make, they remind me that I might be human, but I am an animal too. I’m a domesticated animal. I have all It knowledge inside my head, and I also created and allowed a parasite to share my mind space. That parasite takes the inspiration out of me because I use it against myself.

And when I look at animals and notice they just love, it inspires me to be the same. If they do something out of instinct, they do not punish themselves. They don’t feel guilt or shame like we humans do.

So in It Book, I give gratitude for the animal kingdom’s messages that remind me of who and what I am. I’m an animal with instincts, love, tenderness, and the ability to survive anything that comes my way.

In my personal dream, I used the rattlesnake as an example to control my emotional poison. When the rattlesnake is young, he cannot control his poison. He bites and fights from fear, but when he matures, he learns to control its poison, and that’s where I am now trying to control my “poison.” The second power animal that I have is the bat. The bat leaps and sees through sound and vibration. There was a point in my life where blindness occurred from an illness, and I temporarily lost my vision. Although losing my sight showed me that I could not see myself, to begin with, it taught me to feel my vibration and guide and trust myself.

I learned to live in the dark, the uncomfortable, to trust myself, that I was my light. The third power animal that I resonate with is the Jaguar. It is very special to me because it takes care of the jungle. My mind is my jungle. It is where my Jaguar lives. The Jaguar stalks lives and protects. It is how I have learned to “roam” now in my mind, like a jaguar. Power animals are the biggest reflection of divinity for the Toltecs. The shamanic path is to live our lives in the service of love. Power animals are great teachers to teach It to us.

Ministry Earth: How important is knowing the Shamanic Role of Animals in the Spiritual evolutionary program for Humans?

don Jose Ruiz: It is very important in our shaman training since it teaches us to become observant. Being observant of how we dream, how we grow, how we live. The importance of seeing how they live is a reflection of how we live. Imagine seeing yourself as a powerful animal, with It point of view. You can begin seeing yourself on your path. Its path can show you that you are the love of your life. Or instead, it shows you that you are going on a path against the love of your life, against your animal.

That is why it is so important to see Nature as a reflection of our Nature. When we begin knowing our Nature, we know that we have something inside us called the parasite. It parasite is the negative voice in our minds, filling us with fear and doubt. It comes into our knowledge to sabotage us.

Observing it can expose how we use it against ourselves. If we look at it from the point of view of the role of the animal or what it has to contribute to the jungle, the forest, to the oceans, it shows humans what they have to contribute to the dream of the planet.

The more we consciously wake up, and see our fellow humans, living lies, going on the wrong path, we know that they are not honoring their true essence. When we begin honoring our essence and honoring humanity, we begin seeing through lenses of kindness, compassion, forgiveness, letting go of the stories that no longer serve us. The parasite wants us to keep our eyes and hearts closed to Its way of living.

We do not need love to come to us because happiness is the love that comes from us. It’s already there. You can see It, love, by observing animals, for example, the mother animal. If it sees another baby from another species, she grabs it and just shows it love. If we wake up with A kind of heart, you’re there for any human you learn to see from their point of view. It is the point of view of Divine Mother. That’s why it’s so important to see the evolution of the animals because we can then see our evolution, and it’s all to serve the planet Earth.

Ministry Earth: How can we use this powerful Book?

don Jose Ruiz: One way to use this powerful Book, especially the first chapter, is to teach us all the apprentices. The animals taught us to trust ourselves now from all the teachings that he gave to us. He said, “now you’re not my apprentice as I send you into the world,” and it was a trick because he was always watching, and we are always learning from him. They are trying to teach us to trust in ourselves, to be the Jaguar that is protecting its jungle. Learning to identify what brings us happiness will give us the tools to see what is suffering. this Book has a bunch of animals and descriptions of what each can do. When you feel connected to an animal, open the page, and listen to the gift that they share. The prayer is the form of the agreement that we have with that animal and with us because we are the animal.

We can begin using its abilities to unlearn because, in the Toltec tradition, there is nothing to learn but to unlearn what takes our inspiration away. It powerful Book of animals. Whatever they do, whatever mastery they have in It life, can let us have power by inspiring us. We get inspired to use their Spirit and their abilities so that we can take care of ourselves. I love to do when I wake up in the morning to get that Book and flip the pages.

Then when I flip through it three times, I put a bookmark where it opened. I bookmark it for the day, and I open that page, and whatever animal it is, let us say I opened the page of the hummingbird. The hummingbird is the messenger of the Gods. So that day, I will be aware of what message or messages I am giving to myself and others. If I like that message, I will continue, but I will not share it if I don’t like that message. It gives me the freedom to my power and what I’m offering to my life.
